Who We Are

Helping hurting hearts find hope & healing

Who We Serve

Our core mentoring program serves children and teens ages 5–18, along with their families, who are walking through difficult seasons. Many face anxiety, sadness, low self-worth, or loneliness. Some have experienced bullying, family changes, or situations that left them feeling overwhelmed, most have experienced significant trauma.

As we move forward we will be further opening opportunities for both youth and adults to discover hope, healing and connections through ranch life, the horses and mentoring.

The ranch is simple, peaceful, and focused on giving all a place where they feel seen, valued, and supported.

Meet the People

Heidi Gossen

Founder
Executive Director
Mentor

Whether working with kids or adults, one of Heidi’s greatest joys is walking alongside others in their pursuit of hope and healing. Partnering with horses in this process brings powerful, eye-opening insights that make each moment meaningful.

With a background in psychology, sociology, and certifications in mental health counseling, life coaching, and leadership coaching, Heidi brings a deep well of knowledge, compassion, and discernment to her roles at Crossfire Ranch. Her heart is to encourage, uplift, and speak truth—even the hard kind—when it helps someone grow.

Every step forward, whether small or life-changing, is a cause for celebration. Witnessing God at work in someone’s life and watching freedom unfold is a beautiful and sacred experience.

A verse close to her heart is:
“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”
Psalm 34:8

Elise Baird

Program Director

Elise grew up in southwest Wisconsin on her family’s dairy farm, where she worked alongside her nine siblings and spent every possible moment with her horses. From a young age, she was drawn to the power of horse ministry after reading Bridge Called Hope and Hope Rising by Kim Meeder—books that deeply inspired her with stories of healing and God’s work through horses.

After high school, Elise spent two years serving at Silver Birch Ranch, where she discovered the profound impact that intentional mentorship—rooted in faith and supported by animals—can have on struggling youth. Her time in the barn there helped solidify her calling, and it was during this season that she met Heidi and learned about Crossfire Ranch. Drawn to the mission and vision of the ministry, Elise is excited to be part of the CFR team and all that God is doing through it.

Outside the ranch, Elise enjoys time with her nieces and nephews, baking, singing, reading, and spending time with just about any animal she can find.

Riley Billmann

Originally from northeast Wisconsin, I began my college journey at UW–River Falls and graduated from Tarleton State University in Texas with a degree in Animal Science, emphasizing equine studies. I spent nearly 10 years in Texas working in various roles at veterinary clinics and horse ranches before returning home to Wisconsin in 2020. During this time, I upheld various leadership roles and as a Continuous Improvement Engineer in the manufacturing world. In June 2025, I married my wonderful husband, and together we now live on a cozy hobby farm with our two dogs, four cats, two miniature donkeys and one beloved horse (to be continued with more animals, hopefully soon). Life’s winding path ultimately led me to my true calling – helping others through the use of horses and following Christ’s guidance. Words cannot explain how excited I am to be part of this team and the vision for Crossfire Ranch!

My favorite verse is one that I am diving into and at this time, it is Psalm 23:1-3 “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.”

Emma Willems

2025-2026 Youth Apprentice

Emma joined Crossfire Ranch after submitting her volunteer application—and she’s been a joy to have ever since. With one of the kindest and most encouraging spirits, Emma jumps in wherever she’s needed, always with a positive attitude and a willing heart.

During summer camp, she went above and beyond by offering mini riding lessons to campers eager to grow their skills. Her gentle nature, paired with a confident “I can!” mindset, sets a beautiful example for those around her.

Emma now supports our team by helping with horse exercise and ranch chores, and we are truly blessed to have her with us.

“Let no one look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in your speech, conduct, love, faithfulness, and purity.” — 1 Timothy 4:12

Calli Dodge

Equine Team

When Calli joined the Crossfire Ranch Equine Team she quickly stood out as a young woman of character, dedication, and tenderness. With a deep love for training horses, she finds purpose in helping them become a blessing to others—offering a powerful reminder of the gift of life.

Her decision to join the team was deeply rooted in her growing faith. Over the years, Calli has seen the unique way animals can convey God’s love and truth, and she felt called to help create those meaningful experiences for others.

A talented and passionate horsewoman, Calli brings fresh challenges and consistent care to our herd. When she’s not at the ranch, she’s training as a competitive figure skater—showcasing the same commitment and grace she brings to every ride.

One of her favorite verses, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13), is a guiding force in her life, encouraging her through every challenge—big or small.

Board of Directors

Heidi Gossen

Founder & President

The early stirrings of Crossfire Ranch began in Heidi’s heart around 2006, and since then, she has been journeying this path in many forms. The road has been stretching, beautiful, and filled with transformation—but above all, it has been one of the greatest faith builders in her life, second only to her role as a wife and mom. Heidi firmly believes that Crossfire exists and continues only by the grace, goodness, and wildness of God.

Today, she serves as the co-pilot of Crossfire Ranch, where she finds deep joy in building relationships with the kids, families, and supporters connected to the ministry. One of her greatest delights is watching young people “unfold” as they experience the goodness of connection—with horses, mentors, and ultimately, the love of God.

Heidi’s background is rooted in a lifelong fascination with people—their stories, their growth, and what helps them flourish. She holds degrees in psychology and sociology and has earned certifications in life and leadership coaching, lay counseling, and mental health coaching. Her professional journey includes work in social services and family coaching, but her most cherished role has been raising her own family.

She and her husband are the proud parents of three adult children, two sons-in-law, and grandparents to two sweet little boys. A farm girl at heart and an adventurer by nature, Heidi’s life and calling are firmly grounded in the freedom and foundation found in Christ.

Paige Pollard

Vice President

Paige has been connected to Crossfire Ranch since its beginning, serving in various roles over the years and continuing to be a steady presence in the ministry’s story. Her passion for animals and heart for people have made her a natural fit within the Crossfire community.

She currently works as a receptionist and equine assistant at a veterinary clinic, where she’s been for the past six years. Her professional background has long centered around animals—especially horses and dogs—bringing both skill and compassion to every space she serves.

In 2017, she married her husband, Terrell, after a whirlwind three-month courtship. Together, they share life with their two beloved dogs, one horse, and more houseplants than they care to count.

In her spare time, she enjoys taking on home improvement projects in their old farmhouse, exploring hiking trails with her faithful pups, discovering new taco spots, planning future adventures, and soaking in the peace of quiet moments.

Amanda Moore

Secretary

Amanda lives in Appleton with her husband and their two lively cats, Kitty and Millie. As proud empty nesters, they enjoy their two grown children and cherish time with their spunky granddaughter, who is truly the apple of Amanda’s eye.
Her Christian faith, love of nature, reading, and travel are central to her life beyond family and community.

Amanda is a Certified Fundraising Executive and owner of Moore Fundraising Solutions. With over 15 years of experience, she has successfully helped numerous nonprofits thrive. She holds a master’s degree in public administration with a focus on Nonprofit Management and a bachelor’s degree in social work.

Wendy Nasgovitz

Treasurer

Since joining Crossfire Ranch in 2019, Wendy has been a dedicated part of the team, contributing her skills and heart to the ministry. She currently serves as the business manager at Ecumenical Partnership for Housing, where she oversees volunteer coordination, donations, maintenance, and accounting.

At home, she is a proud mom to three sons—two attending UW Green Bay and the youngest a senior at Wisconsin Virtual Academy. Their family also includes three dogs and a tortoise, who complete their lively household.

C. Dominica McGinnis

Board Member

Since 2017, C. Dominica McGinnis has been an integral part of the Crossfire Ranch community. She is the executive coach and CEO of BridgeField Group, where she partners with professionals, business owners, and leaders to advance their personal and professional goals.

Dominica specializes in driving performance, growth, culture, and leadership success. As a strategic ally, she helps clients implement effective strategies, align vision and culture, expand their practices, strengthen leadership teams, overcome obstacles, and achieve their goals.

When she’s not coaching or collaborating, Dominica enjoys a life off the beaten path near Austin, Texas.

Meet The Horses

Titus

Titus, whose name means “title of honor,” joined Crossfire Ranch in 2025 as a rescued horse, lovingly adopted by Paige, one of our dedicated board members. He’s a curious and quick learner, with a gentle spirit that captured our hearts almost immediately.

A young Percheron and Friesian Sport Horse cross, Titus is destined to grow into a magnificent and powerful presence. Though he won’t be ready to carry riders for several years, he’s already thriving in the care and attention he receives. Titus delights in being groomed and eagerly soaks up every new lesson, learning patiently from the ground up. His kind demeanor and quiet sweetness remind us daily of the promise and potential found in every rescued soul. We’re grateful to watch Titus’s journey unfold as he grows stronger and more confident with each passing day.

Randy

Randy joined us at Crossfire Ranch in April 2025. Like many horses, his journey has been full of twists and turns. He was originally rescued by a local organization and then adopted. After some time with a loving adopter, he was returned when she could no longer care for him due to her own health challenges. It was then that Pamella—a cherished friend of the ranch—gifted Randy to us. She named him in honor of her late husband and his deep love for horses, making Randy’s arrival even more meaningful.

Since coming to the ranch, Randy has begun to settle in beautifully. He’s quickly become the “everybody’s buddy” horse in the herd—steady, gentle, and full of quiet kindness. His calm presence and open-hearted nature continue to unfold with each passing day. Randy’s story has already touched many hearts, and we are deeply grateful that his path has led him here.

Abby

Abby, a beautiful and sturdy Percheron cross, joined the Crossfire Ranch herd in 2025. She is lovingly owned by Emma, one of our extraordinary ranch hands, and has quickly become a favorite among riders of all ages.

With her large frame and kind, steady presence, Abby is the very definition of a gentle giant. She takes great care of those who ride her, offering a sense of calm and confidence with every step. It’s a joy to watch kids of all sizes climb into the saddle—often a little unsure at first—and then light up as their fears melt away. Abby has a special way of teaching us all the value of looking beyond appearances to discover the quiet strength and sweetness within. Her impact is as big as her heart, and we’re so grateful to have her as part of our herd.

Lucy

Lucy, named after the brave and kind-hearted Lucy Pevensie from The Chronicles of Narnia, is a compact little lady with a heart full of questions. She’s both curious and cautious—a thoughtful observer of the world around her.

Lucy became part of the Crossfire Ranch herd in the summer of 2024 and has quickly won over a growing number of admirers. Her striking blue eyes seem to capture everyone’s attention and invite connection. She adores being brushed and pampered, and it’s not uncommon to find her trailing behind her two-legged friends, eager to be part of whatever’s happening. With each day, Lucy continues to charm and delight those lucky enough to spend time with her.

Jasper

Jasper holds a special place in our hearts as the original horse of Crossfire Ranch. A striking chestnut with a bold blaze down his face, Jasper is a beautiful blend of Belgian strength and Arabian spirit. His sturdy build and kind eyes make him as comforting to be around as he is handsome to behold.

With a unique mix of calm steadiness and playful mischief, Jasper brings both reassurance and lighthearted energy to those around him. True to his curious nature, he can be a bit of a goof—full of toddler-like antics that keep us smiling. If left to his own devices, he might just lead an unsuspecting rider on an impromptu adventure, happily exploring wherever his feet decide to go.

Still, when it’s time to work, Jasper is our trusted “steady eddy.” He’ll go wherever he’s pointed without hesitation. He especially loves the open trail and the freedom of the outdoors. The arena may not be his favorite place, but he’ll stand patiently and give his best to whatever is asked of him.
Jasper’s steady heart and loyal nature have helped shape the foundation of Crossfire Ranch in the most beautiful way.

Tigg’r

Tigg’r is a charming miniature horse, or “mini,” born in 2011 with a striking grullo pinto coat—his smoky gray coloring accented by bold white patches makes him a true standout in the herd. He became part of the Crossfire Ranch family in the summer of 2023 as one half of a rescued miniature pony duo. When Tigg’r first arrived, he was malnourished and deeply afraid of people, uncertain of his place in the world. But over time, he’s transformed into a bright, social little horse who brings joy to all who meet him. Though still sensitive to sudden movement, Tigg’r thrives with gentle, patient interaction. He’s often the first to greet you at the gate—sometimes just to say hello, other times plotting a sneaky escape! He loves attention but can become overwhelmed by too much affection at once, so he does best with a kind and respectful approach. Tigg’r’s favorite things include running and playing in the arena with his best buddy, Spirit, and doing just about anything for a mouthful of grass or a well-earned treat. His journey from fear to friendship is a beautiful reminder of the healing that comes from trust, care, and connection.

Spirit

Spirit is a petite Paint miniature horse, affectionately known as a “mini,” born in 2011. With her eye-catching coat of bold patches and her gentle, soulful eyes, she became part of the Crossfire Ranch family in the summer of 2023 as one half of a rescued miniature pony duo.
When Spirit first arrived, she was quiet, withdrawn, and so weary she could barely lift her head. But over time, and with lots of patient care and love, her true spirit began to shine through. Today, she’s a sweet and gentle presence on the ranch, always eager to lift her head—especially if treats are involved!

Spirit adores children and soaks up affection with grace. She’s kind, patient, and perfectly content to stand still for hugs, brushes, and quiet moments. And where there’s Spirit, there’s always her best friend Tigg’r. The two are nearly inseparable, a little pair that brings warmth and smiles to everyone they meet. Spirit’s story is a beautiful reminder that even the most tender spirits can find strength again when surrounded by love.

Prince

Prince is a regal sorrel Polish Arabian, born in 1995, with a distinctive star on his forehead and elegant white socks that add to his refined appearance. He is lovingly owned by Ken and Christi Gottschalk and brings a noble presence to the ranch.

As is common with Arabians, Prince has a naturally spirited personality, which means he thrives best with a confident and calm partner. He’s not new to people—having spent time as a horseback riding lesson horse, Prince knows his way around the saddle and responds well to clear, gentle guidance.
Despite his lively breed, Prince is a patient and kind-hearted gentleman, especially with children. He’s always happy to stand quietly for grooming sessions, soaking up every bit of love and attention offered to him. With his experience, grace, and warm disposition, Prince continues to be a steady and meaningful part of the Crossfire Ranch herd.

Angel hearts ~ Cohete ~

2006-2023

While time will fade, the hoofprints on our hearts will last a lifetime.

Over 3 1/2 years ago we were introduced to this then stand-off-ish horse named Cohete. He stood back from the gate, would move away from it and anxiously shy away when approached.

With time and tenderness Cohete grew to a place where he wore a different heart on his sleeve. He became an incredible teacher, four-legged mentor and with eager anticipation would come up and greet all. Cohete was a friend, a great listener and question asker. He taught many how to trust, share thoughts and simply be. He let us know when his anxiety was getting the best of him and helped us understand how to help him through those times. He gave freely and without shame shared his needs. Cohete welcomed “all the scratches” and would often gently back up towards willing hands to have his patootie scratched. In true Cohete form he would move forward and back so just the right spots were being tended to. In sharing his love it became pretty common for him to rest his chin on a shoulder or nuzzle an arm or shoulder with his gentle lips.

These years were likely the best of his life. He unfolded like a freshly blooming flower in spring and seemed to relish every moment young and old alike spent with him.

Though he will be deeply missed we will also choose to stay in a place of sincere gratitude and thank God for allowing us the time we had with Cohete. Grieving means that love was shared and we share it together today and as we adjust to his absence. We know that one day Jesus will make “all things new” and that through Him we will get to see this beautiful horse that we were given to steward well… no DSLD or other frailty, but fully the creation God intended him to be.

~Junior~

It was an honor to serve along side this sage and saint of a horse. At 40 years of age Junior has given many rides, calmed nerves, and been a sweet place of refuge for his two legged friends.

His welcome was often accompanied by his nose doing all the sniffs as he took in the essence of his company. His gentleness unsurpassed. His desire to be all that he could be showed up again yesterday as he jiggy jogged into the arena and then very happily joined his friends in the pasture.

The Lord gave us all a special gift through this beautiful creature. As we say our good byes today we know that he will run again in the green pastures and warmth of heaven’s splendor.

To experience the pain of loss is also to have known the joy of connection and love.

Lord thank you for sharing Junior with us, for the many lives he has touched throughout his abundant years. We ask that you comfort those who grieve.

Run free sweet boy. Run free.
